Blue BabyYou are a paediatric core trainee covering the neonatal unit and postnatal ward in a district general hospital on a Friday night shift. You are about to undertake a long line insertion for a preterm 30 weeks gestation infant, and have scrubbed and an established a sterile field with the registrar who is supervising you. The baby is having her long line inserted to establish total parenteral nutrition. You have successfully inserted one long line with supervision before in a term infant. You have started decontamination of the skin, when you are informed by the neonatal nurse who is holding your bleep about two babies on the postnatal ward who require review. Baby 1 is 8 hours old, has been feeding poorly and has a respiratory rate of 70/min. Baby 2 is 2 days old and appears jaundiced. Mother’s blood group is O+ve. What is the appropriate next action? |
